Could you throw the the light on ADVERBS?

There some adverbs come bofore the verb and at other times come in the end.

{I "waited patiently" .........
........................................................... and I "gradually hoisted" myself ....}
This is what I mean. why does the adverb " gradually" come before the verb? whilst others come after?
