how to understand 'that' for the paragraph? #1 (permalink) Wed May 23, 2007 21:15 pm   how to understand 'that' for the paragraph?

Hi,guys

I have some questions for the following paragraph. Please help me.

Quote:
'Reality' TV is such big business now that 2003 will see at least 16 new shows on our television screens. But why are these programmes so incredibly popular? What is it in the human psyche that encourages this kind of voyeurism? Is it just a way of escaping from the day-to-day trivia of our own lives? Whatever the reasons, it looks as though 'reality' TV is here to stay, for the foresseable future at least.

I want to analyze the term, that, according to the English grammar. Because I often get confused how to understand 'that' correctly. That would be adverb, relative pronoun, conjunction and others. There are so many ways to use it. I hope I could understand more about it from analyzing this paragraph.

1. 'Reality' TV is such big business now that 2003 will see at least 16 new shows on our television screens.

I think here that is a kind of conjection. It leads a adverb clause to express why reality TV is a big business now. Am I right?

2.What is it in the human psyche that encourages this kind of voyeurism?

I think here that is a kind of pronoun. It represents what. Am I right?

Thanks in advance.

Maggie :P

Hi,

Quote:
1. 'Reality' TV is such big business now that 2003 will see at least 16 new shows on our television screens.

I'd suggest the sentence = 'Reality' TV is such (a) big business/so big a business now that 2003 will see at least 16 new shows on our television screens.

So, it belongs to the 'so...that' or 'such...that' structure. ('that' introduces a consequence, close to 'as a result')

Quote:
2.What is it in the human psyche that encourages this kind of voyeurism?

I think the sentence could be rewritten as:

What is it that/which encourages this kind of voyeurism in the human psyche?

So 'that' here refers to 'it'.
