need help with subjunctive form #1 (permalink) Thu May 24, 2007 5:11 am   need help with subjunctive form

I am having difficulty with the subjunctive form in English.

Can you please help me with this example:

"I suggest that you stop drinking alcohol."

Is this sentence a correct subjunctive? Is it correct to use word like "drinking" with "-ing" in subjunctive form?

I appreciate all the help you can give me. Thank you.

Hi,

I think there are two points here. In your example you have correctly identified the subjunctive. The use of 'drinking' after 'stop' is another matter altogether. Some verbs can be followed by the gerund ('ing' form) or infinitive, others are invariably followed by the gerund only. 'Stop' is one of those verbs that is usually followed only by the gerund.
