TOEFL Essay: Evaluation of teachers #1 (permalink) Sun May 27, 2007 21:15 pm   TOEFL Essay: Evaluation of teachers

Hello!
Question:
Schools should ask students to evaluate their teachers. Do you agree or disagree? Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.
Answer:
In our country students should evaluate teachers once in a blue moon, but I believe that such practice can be useful in improving of educational process. There are both advantages and disadvantages of such approach, but the formers outweigh, because teachers will prepare for classes better, school administration should assess the teachers more effectively and student will attend classes more studiously.

When the person knows that his work will be assessed directly, he will probably try to do his best. And teachers are not exceptions. Having a clear perspective of rewarding for excellent teaching, a professor would improve and diversify his lectures. Probably, he even reads some books about the interaction with the young and finds new methods to improve students’ abilities to comprehend the material.

When students evaluate their teachers, they give possibilities for the administration to award the best ones. In some USA’s universities it’s common case when students choose the best teacher each year by themselves. But the time between such elections is long and some teachers don’t try to become better, having huge competitiveness and small money prizes. I suppose that monthly rewards will be the best solution despite on necessary funds’ increasing.

Finally, students would attend classes better when they are able to assess the quality of teaching. Nobody wants to attend boring classes, but everyone likes the vivid discussions and high-quality lectures. Choosing the best professor they could encourage other teachers to improve themselves. On the other hand such evaluation, sometimes, isn’t an honest process. For instance, students could be biased assessing a very proficient, but severe teacher.

I think that student should evaluate teachers because this process is quite useful. Such methods could make better the quality of education and help to highlight the achievements of best teachers.

PS: He is not a good teacher.
