Hi Jamie,

Quote:
You wouldn't say that 'natives' sounds somewhat old-fashioned and offensive in that sentence?

No.

Well, that's your opinion. Other experts have told me they disagree with you,
and I believe these experts in English know the language at least as well as you do.

And for that reason you're prone to making embarrassing cultural errors in English. Just because a person likes to do it and is indulging a personal fetish for royalty, that doesn't make it any less improper.

Please do not make this personal again.

Quote:
Also, you improperly capitalized the word "sovereign". It's not to be capitalized when used generically.

That's correct.

Hi Englishuser,

Don't you think that the days of royalty are numbered? Why would anyone apart from historians be interested in those titles?

TD

That's the QEII, I think.

Ol' Liz must be upset that it wasn't named appropriately:

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, Ruler of the Seas, Head of the Realm, Conqueror of France, Scourge of Evil, Founder of Bliss, Suppressor of Strife, Mother of Britannia II.

Hi Tom,

Do you mean that QEII herself is the person most likely to be interested in preserving those old fashioned and award titles? Maybe Englishuser is a member of the royal family too?

no, I was just poking a little fun.

I bet she's down-to-earth enough not to mind being abbreviated to QEII.

...or Elizabeth, or Queen, or Your/Her Majesty.

I would imagine she doesn't require her secretary to say, "Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth The Second's office. How may we help you?" upon answering the phone.

Excuse me, but I'm trained as an English expert. Just because someone is hypersensitive and attaches meanings and connotations to a word that aren't really there, it doesn't mean they're right.

Remember the last time you hauled out "experts" as big guns to shoot my argument down. I was on an English experts' list with some of the very people whose books you quoted, I contacted them personally, and they backed up my judgment.

Of course it doesn't. How did you become an English expert?

Hi Englishuser,

What makes you think the Queen is "an expert of the English language"? How do you define "English expert" anyway? Do you think there is a difference between an "English expert" and an "English language expert"?

Perhaps a native speaker of English or a non-native speaker of English with an overall IELTS Band Score of 9 who studied the English language at university up to a post-doctoral level?
