It is. Its validity depends on the circumstances, I suppose, but as most people generally like being complimented, it would fulfill its purpose even if it's not the most formal way of conveying the thought.

You know, it might not be appropriate if you are, say, a groom speaking to your bride as she takes her place next to you in front of the preacher.

"Babe, you look awesome" wouldn't fit there. hehe

Strangely enough, I never compliment people on their appearance. I just do not think it would be appropriate at all.

Why not? Do you like it when people tell you that you look nice/good/attractive etc?

I mean usually it's someone like a family member or your date who might say something like that to you.

I can see where it might be unwanted (your ex-girlfriend/boyfriend, for example), but isn't it nice to give a compliment generally?

I don't mean that we should judge people by their appearance.

This brings up one of the great sayings in our language:

"Don't judge a book by its cover."

But, you know, you can do a world of good for someone with a simple "Hey, dude, that's a cool shirt" or "You look nice tonight" or some such compliment.

I am glad to praise somebody if they are really very beautiful and handsome. I simply want them to feel happier. Especailly for female,they are very likely to hear somebody compliments on them. But if someone doesn't look nice,I say nothing. I just want to have a great mood with others. Like my mom,if I say 'mom,you look like younger than before'. She definitely would get a good mood. She would say 'thanks' for me. Sometimes I would say that it's a kind of good starting to talk something.

Well yeah, if someone is just returning from a day spent hunting or riding bikes through mud (among other such activities), probably "You look great, Charles" would be taken more as a joke than as a true compliment.

"And you smell even better" would seal the deal -- you really were joking. hehe
