I don't know if I have heard American men call each other "cock" in anything but an insulting way.
"Cock" in this usage is an extremely obscene slang word for "penis", so unless you want to be very insulting, or else attract sexual attention, you should avoid saying it.
There are some filthy compound words derived from "cock" also, but I'll let you discover them yourself. |

Hi,
I think this usage is almost unheard of in North American English but quite common in British English.

| Nonetheless, when used in reference to a person it still means penis. Since North Americans are the majority of native English speakers, and their usages tend to spread around the world, I'd avoid using the expression that way. You're liable to embarrass yourself with that kind of localism. There are plenty of other expressions you can use. |

Hi Jamie,
I asked:
| Quote: |
| Would it be appropriate for a woman to address a man in this way in casual/conversational English, in your opinion? Are there many "masculine" and "feminine" words in English? |
I hope someone familiar with British English will tell me what they think about this. I am interested in localisms, and do wish to know what English people from different parts of England think. Alan, are you reading this thread?
All the best

Yeah, unless you're quoting the Bible ("...cock crows three times..."), if you use the word "cock" in the USA, you're (not you personally) either using romantic language with your girlfriend/boyfriend (or what have you) OR you're projecting an insult.
Jamie said to discover the insults for yourself (those with "cock" in them).
A fairly common one in the US is "cocksucker".

Or... well, if you are a fan/alumnus/student of the University of South Carolina athletic teams, you might use "Cocks/Gamecocks" without the intent to insult or be crude.
...the U of South Carolina's teams are known as the Gamecocks.

yeah
But I'd put decent money on someone in the group of listeners chuckling EVEN WHEN it's obvious that the speaker is talking about a male chicken (or other male birds).
Tom: So yesterday the cock crowed at 4am and I was like, "Damn, you jerk, shut up!"
Elmer (arbitrary name): HEHEHEHE YOU SAID "COCK"!

Hi, Prezbucky
Could you narrate me your joke about that old blonde ?
PS: I just remembered a South Park episode (not the exact quotation, but the sense is the same):
---You ostriched it up ---I what? ---I meant you cocked it up so badly that I had to choose a bigger bird |

What do a blonde and an airplane have in common?
