Could anyone give me some information on the origion of the expression 'by the seat of (one's) pants' ?

I believe this has aviation roots. In the old days, pilots flew the planes with very few instruments. They had to rely on the movement of the planes (felt through the seat of their pants) to tell what the planes were doing.
