Hello. Sometimes it's a little boring to write TOEFL essays. But I consider them as a great source of new ideas. Writing an essay you have to generate a lot of interesting thoughts just in minutes. So write essays and you be a successful man. PS: Alan, please help me. I use so many "you", "we" and "I" in my essays. What shoud I do to omit them? Question:
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? It is more important for students to study history and literature than it is for them to study science and mathematics. Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.
Answer:
I utterly disagree with the following statement and I am convinced that it’s more important for students to learn mathematics and science rather that history and literature. I suppose so for the following reasons: studying science you could easily find a job, you could see the realization of your ideas and you could enjoy the essential knowledge of the humankind.
The rivalry in the contemporary world is terrific and it’s quite hard to find a well-paid and interesting job. Studying science you guarantee yourself the warm place, because there is a lot of new developing IT - companies which are ready to hire new employees and which provide huge opportunities for career growth. I saw the last year statistics in the Internet and it’s an amazing fact that almost all students, who studied science, especially computer science, have found jobs within three months after graduation. On the other hand, a half of ones who studied humanities, like literature and history, aren’t employed yet.
Also, being a specialist in natural sciences one could see the direct implementation of his ideas. It has no matter, whether you develop the new gadget or discover new vaccine; in all situations you have the certain product which benefits the entire society. However, practicing literature and history anyone makes much paper but not something useful for humanity. I don’t think that the latter professions are obsolete or useless; I simply suppose that the student will be more satisfied in future, producing the real things rather than abstract ideas.
Finally, even specialists in history and literature should have basic knowledge in science. Without such skills the writer won’t type his thoughts on the computer and the archaeologist will not be able to use the up-to-date equipment. Because of these reasons I consider the knowledge in science as more basic than the knowledge in humanities.
Eventually, I think that every person should be on the right place; a good engineer will not be a good writer and vice versa. However, I guess that anyone has to have science and mathematics in his curriculum, because they are absolutely necessary in the contemporary world. |
