I figure out that I ... my cell phone in the theather? #1 (permalink) Mon Jun 11, 2007 2:25 am   I figure out that I ... my cell phone in the theather?

Hi,guys

I figure out that I ____ my cell phone in the theather.
(A)left (B)had left (C)has left (D)had been left

The correct answer is (B),but my answer is (A).

Would you please tell me if I could choose (A)? If not, what's the reason?
Thanks a lot.

Maggie

Are you sure it wasn't "I figured out"? The way you had it...it's a tough call. Instinctly I would use "had left" but I have no grammatical basis for it.

Hi,
I figured out that I had left my cell phone in the theather

Your instinct doesnt let you down Smile Grammar says that sinse the action expressed by "leave" happened early than the first action which was in the past, we must use the past perfect to avoid any possible ambiguities in the meaning.

hi,guys

Thanks so much. This way I make sense easily and I think I would not forget to use this sentense pattern because of your detailed explanations. As I know most English teachers or English books rarely mention about why we use the sentense patterns, such as past perfect, past etc, they simply tell us the formula, sentense pattern. So I like the sentense we must(have to) use the past perfect to avoid any possible ambiguities in the meaning. I hope everybody would use this way to teach others in any fields not only in teaching English as they could.
