Hi Chris,
We have great success in teaching TOEIC Preparation group classes in the classroom and many schools use differing techniques ..
Firstly, we select students for the class in respect to their proficiency grouping. We use our online estimate test at www.theenglishlink.de as we find it is the easiest method offering many advantages. For those that cannot do the test online, we offer the test in a hard copy form that they complete during a registration sitting at our school.
We use a focused training technique and concentrate on first assessing the English proficiency of the student and where they need support in basic English. For this we use Cutting Edge, Market Leader, Cambridge, Headway and many other books depending on which book best fits the needs of the students. However, we also run classes without a book, where our trainers/administrators will create specific assessments and lessons themselves for the course.
We then start getting the students accustomed to the TOEIC test. First by an introduction to the TOEIC Test, its procedures, administration and about what to expect on the big day. Then to the question types, methods of approach and planning.
As a test centre, we have the direct knowledge and experience required and therefore have created our own TOEIC Preparation course including a range of TOEIC questions for the student to complete. I am aware that a large amount of other schools in our area tend to use the Official TOEIC Preparation Guide.
All our students are able to use our TOEIC preparation website at www.onlineenglish.eu free of charge to support their training outside class hours and when we have the use of computers in the classroom, we also use our TOEIC Preparation website in-class where the students follow the course on the website. Our trainers then support this training directly.
We actually have a few schools worldwide that have approached us and now use our training website both in and out of class to support their own TOEIC preparation courses, maybe this would be of interest to you.
Being a test centre has its advantages. Therefore maybe more than once depending on the length of the course however, especially on the final day of the course, we allow the students to complete our full 2 hour TOEIC practice test under real-life TOEIC Test sitting conditions. Basically we put on our TOEIC Test centre hat and carry out a TOEIC test sitting using our own generated practice material.
I hope this is helpful.
