I'd like to talk about South Park.
Have you seen this cartoon?
Do you like it?
What's your attitude towards its explicit content?
What's your favourite hero?

(Recently I downloaded all its 11 seasons (which are available for free downloading on the internet) and instantly took to it.)

I happen to like South Park. It's rather obscene, but it is really excellent satire. I especially enjoy it when they make fun of Al Gore, and of people in San Francisco. My favorite character is the cook.

At this very moment I've watched the last episode of the seventh season Smile
So far all I can say is that at least I've learnt a little bit how to make out words, which is cool Smile

LS

Do not use "ain't"

...unless you're in the US South or certain rural areas west of the Mississippi (like Texas, Oklahoma, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, etc.).

I mean it's never right to use "ain't", technically. But in some locations (such as those listed above), it's accepted as common speech.

Hi,
Yeah, I know that, but thanks for pointing that out Smile

(off topic: I heard Eminem say once: I don't owe noone of my family nothing or something like that. And Weird Al made fun of that in one of his fake "interviews" with famous people, like Em had used tripple negative. What a laugh)

cool beans

that thing about eminem is funny -- he likely picked up most of his speech habits from his childhood/adolescent environment, which was (I think) urban Detroit.

I have had to teach English writing classes to people from Eminem's neighborhood, and if he hadn't found his music career, he'd probably have been in my class.

They speak a variety of English that's mostly Appalachian mixed with some black, but with a normal Michigan white person's accent. They have atrocious problems with grammar and, for example, they can't form a conditional sentence such as, "If I had seen you, I would have given you a ride." They're also almost impossible to teach, because they hold something in their minds for no more than 5 minutes. If you teach them to do something, go on to something else, and then a few minutes later go back to whatever it was you taught them to do, not only can't they do it, but they can't even remember that you taught it to them! They're very mentally challenged guys, and they've got the most bizarre styles of logic I've ever seen.

Hmmm... that's strange... How do they dispense with those types of a sentence then?

.
My guess is that Jamie is going to tell you they'd say it this way:

If I would've saw you, I would've gave you a ride. Shocked

It's not just in the Detroit area that type 3 if-sentences are getting mangled these days. Thankfully, though, not everyone mangles things so horribly.

If I'd-a done seen you, I'd-a done given (or "gave") you a ride.

-- One possible form of the Southern translation of the italicized sentence in Amy's post (courtesy of Jamie).

I saw you = I seen you

...in some US households.

BEWARE!

Hi lost_soul,

I watched South Park The Movie last night. I was dumbfounded for a minute or so and then after a couple of minutes after that I felt like I need to wash my ears. I totally get it why it is banned in Malaysia.

But it was funny though. Especially when the Canadian cartoon characters pronounce "about", aboot. Cute. But the whole experience was, how do I put it... surreal.

Enjoy your South Park, as long as you don't start speaking like Eric (or is it Erik?). Then the Professor will have to put the V chip in your brain. Smile
