Hi,

I'm not sure about the meaning of 'run off' here. Does 'off' mean 'by means of'?

'He was sitting before a tiny heater running off a cylinder of Calor gas'

I googled 'run off' to find some other examples:
...running off a CD is much slower than having the system boot from the hard
...the system was running off a battery
...this Powerbook is running off a 1 GB compact flash memory card

Thanks,
Majid, Iran

It means that that heater was "feeding" on the fuel in that cylinder, i.e. it was getting fuel from that cylinder.
