I'm a licensed teacher trainer who has worked in the US and Latin America (and ESL in Asia prior to this). Lately I've been reading quite a bit about how much ESL is taking off in China, as well as the emphasis some organizations are placing on concepts such as student-centered classrooms and experiential learning. It seems there must be a huge demand for quality teacher development there in these areas, but over the web it can be a bit overwhelming! Does anyone have any suggestions about certain sites or organizations that might be interesting to explore? Thanks!

Hi JVM

You might want to try the lancelot school.

http://www.lancelotschool.com/start/start

I do not know any specific chinese based web projects, try www.xing.com

Choose a relevant group though

Hi JVM,

In addition to Stew's links you also might want to check into this this TEFL China site. By the way, why are planning to teach in China -- why not in Europe or another Asian country?

Talk to you soon,
Torsten

Thanks all for the help!!! I'll research the web pages you've suggested.

In answer to your question, I've been training teachers using the above mentioned methods of Ss-centered classes and the other kinds of innovative techniques that entails.... right around the time I was thinking to schedule a visit to China to visit a good friend in Beijing, I was thinking what ESL work (non fly-by-night) I could consider when I ran across this article about the phenomenon created by Harvard-going Tang Meijie:

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/04/01/magazine/01China.t.html?ex=1183089600&en=9e67b9f693c71794&ei=5070

And that sent me in this direction :)

Cheers!

JYM It says you'd have to purchase the article to read it. Do you think you can paste it over here?

The article was the cover story for the NY Times Magazine, so it is quite big... I'm not sure if I can post something that long! For anyone interested in reading it, feel free to post your email and I can send it as an attachment, unless you have a better idea 8)
