I thought it was about time, after so much negatives examples of bad learning or reluctance to learn, that we should highlight some motivational examples.

I had one student who learned to speak good English as a "real" (starting form scratch) beginner within 4 years. This was a great example, as the elderly dear lady was 67 when she started. Her motivation was simply to be able to read bed time stories to her grand child in English by the time the baby was old enough to understand or just attentively listen. She achieved this and became a great Roald Dahl fan.

I had another tandem partner who moved to Scotland with an intermediate level English and worked their in social work. She came back speaking relatively fluent, albeit with cute Scottish accent.

I had a student who has now lived in London for three years, and was nervous about working in this very multi-culti capital, as she was going to be a dentist. After a few unsure months, she found encouragement and was hired by Kings College University Hospital, a highly reputable establishment.

I had a student who worked for csg, the German call centre for IBM in Germany. Although not so confident of his telephone skills he was very successfull. Dealing aptly with strong accents from South Africa, America and Great Britian.
So much so that he that they really tried to get him to stay, after he decided to go it alone and join a brand new company.

What is the morale here? Motivation and drive.
Despite insecurities you can overcome all hurdles.

"cute Scottish accent"

I like the Scottish accent (or at least I think I do -- if it was somewhat accurate in Braveheart...):

Oi'm Wulliam Wawlace

hehe

Motivation/drive and intelligence, I think, are the (main) keys to knowledge attainment and retainment.
