Why is it 'compensating' and not 'compensate'? Sat Jun 30, 2007 5:57 am  Why is it 'compensating' and not 'compensate'?

Hi,

In other situations financial reward can go --- way to compensating for dull, repetitive work, but housework is a strenuous job with no pay.

I'd appreciate If you could answer my two questions:

1) why is an adjective not possible here before the singular countable noun 'way'? (answer: some)
2) Why is it 'compensating' and not 'compensate'? I searched it on the web and it seems that both are possible. Is there any difference?

Thanks,

Majid

The expressions are: 'go some way towards / to doing something' or 'go a long way towards/ to doing something'. In the expressions, 'to' plays a role of a preposition, so it must be followed by a V-ing.
