Hi,

Could you please help me with the following passage?

Quote:
Maybe sixty missions were too many for the men to fly, Colonel Cathcart reasoned, if Yossarian objected to flying them, but he then remembered that forcing his men to fly more missions than everyone else was the most tangible achievement he had going for him.

1. Could I reword it to: the most tangible achievement he had standing for him?

2. Does 'him' refer to Colonel Cathcart, the thinker? If so, could it be replaced by 'himself'?

Thank you!

Hi Haihao,

I think an alternative to 'going for him' could be 'in his favour'. Yes, 'him' refers to the colonel but this is not a reflexive construction and so 'himself' would not work here.
