Hi Alan,

Many thanks for your explanation -- so Adam and Jane can give the following commands (among others):
- bear right
- keep right
- turn right

Very interesting...
Regards,
Torsten

Yes, Youssef relying on yourself is a very good strategy which mean to make use of such tools like GPS and cars. After all we do live in the age of information technologies, don't we?

Dear Alan,
Thank you very much for your new story and this website, it is really useful for me. Then now i would like to know where can I search these two questions that are "What is meant by phonetic realization? and how is a phoneme related to its phonetic realization?
I tried but I could not get the right website. I believe that you would help me.
Thank you.

Hi Cecilia,

If you go to Google and look for "phonetic realization", you will find more than 30.000 pages that contain the term. I suggest you read through some of them to get an idea of what "phonetic realization" means and you might find an answer to your second question too.

reply to Dear aimankenzhebekova: Do you know where you're going? GPS Thu Jul 19, 2007 10:58 am  reply to Dear aimankenzhebekova: Do you know where you're going? GPS

Dear Alan,

I really appreciate your newsletter from 10 July.

The thing is I didn't expect such a letter so I was a sort of surprised to hear such an answer. I thought what is HE trying to tell me?! What relation does this GPS have to the Test your English?

You know I HAVE heard about GPS much but unfortunately I didn't have a chance to try it myself. My brother-in-law has it in his car (Toyota Windom - bytheway it's a right-hand car) but it doesn't work - maybe the reason is that in our country there are some definite settings for it or something.

Concerning my native language - it is Kazakh, but I have grown up in the USSR and my current Russian is much better than my native tongue. So you see. Of course there is a number of variations of the Kazakh, mostly it's connected with regional dialects.
As for me, I like British English accent, but I don't think my pronunciation sound at least a bit like it. I speak more an American English way of pronunciation, I suppose or, maybe it should be called Kazakh pronunciation reminding of an American one. I am joking.

Hope to receive some of your letters soon.

Have a nice day.

Yours,
Aiman Kenezhebekova

Do you always know where you are going? Mon Jul 23, 2007 0:51 am  Do you always know where you are going?

Thank you for your nice "message". Now, to answer your question-if I know where I always go- Perhaps it will sound odd for someone my age to say that s/he doesn't drive but it's my case. However, the GPs would be really helpful in my case but still better with an 'automatic' driver- if it's correct to use this word. Any way, I hope I always know where I go because I never dare try unknown ways or streets. I don't like the feeling of being lost.
Back to your trip, you nearly crossed all Europe, lucky you. Smile
Before going, i have to confess having joined your forum, so first, I would like you not to stop sending such amazing explanations and precious information; and second to remind me, please, of my password or screenname ... Thanks
Hayet.

Dear Alan,

Thank you so much for your current newsletter. I enjoy reading your story in which your Tom-Tom plays an important role in your journey, and possibly picture the scene brought to me.

GPS is such a great "dagger", people carry it with them to kill opponent on the way in order to reach the destination. Without it, the opponent as any obstacle will take time away from you; waste your energy; make you feel exhausted;... Just try it once, you would realize how helpful it is to you, especially if you are a person who has to drive very often on a daily basis.

Really appreciate your efforts.

Best regards,
