"Did" - use present or past tense of verb? #2 (permalink) Sat Jul 14, 2007 6:10 am   "Did" - use present or past tense of verb?

Welcome to English-Test.Net, Akroyd.

These are correct:

The drunk man did not even take notice of the notes he gave the waiter.

"I gave the waiter a tip," the man said.

For added stress, 'did give' is possible in your second sentence. 'Did' shows the past tense, and with the operator (do, does, did) we use the infinitive (or dictionary form) of the main verb.

Our new friend was just quoting the test sentence, MM.

Harry, that sentence does look like something you are trying to say yourself -- quotation marks or using the 'quote' function should do the trick, though. Smile

Nice to meet you, by the way, Harry and Akroyd!
