What the phrase 'unhappy glance' mean? #1 (permalink) Tue Jul 17, 2007 21:13 pm   What the phrase 'unhappy glance' mean?

Hello, everyone!

I'd like to ask what the phrase 'unhappy glance' mean in the following sentence:

On one hand the church condemned credit and cast unhappy glances on both borrowers and lenders.

With which word can "unhappy" be replaced in this phrase. I myself think that unhappy here means something like annoyed.

Hi,

From your sentence I would suggest that the church disapproved of borrowers and lenders and they looked at them (glances) in a disapproving way. In other words they won't happy/content with the idea of credit.
