Hi,

Do you think these sentences are strange:

Quote:
In the self-catering Halls we provide kitchen facilities that you share with a number of other Hall residents.

Quote:
Fully-catered accommodation offers a well balanced range of meals with vegetarian options at every meal.

All the best

Alan, was your "Yes" doing double duty as a response to both of the questions preceding it?

I think I'll go and cut the grass. This is all getting too complicated for me. All I know is that 'self-catering' means catering for yourself, 'self-supporting' means supporting yourself and self-regulating means regulating itself. In the words of my favourite English poet, John Keats:

Quote:
- that is all
Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know.

Since you were the one who brought up self-service, I thought you might have been suggesting that the expression is used in connection with rentals. Of course, there's also the word self-serving, but that normally wouldn't have anything to do with rental apartments (or telephones either).

Have you ever actually seen the term 'self-service' used in this context in the US?

I've heard of it used in reference to places that have no food, laundry and cleaning service, but not of places that just have no food service.

Thanks, Jamie. I can't remember having seen it used that particular way myself, but I suppose if I saw it in that context, that's exactly what I'd understand.
