This site looks like it gives a lot of information, and leads you to still more information.

Every graduate school has its own different entrance requirements, so it's best to find them on the sites of the schools themselves.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison is an excellent institution at a reasonable price. The campus (in Madison) is awesome -- always something to do, something to see, etc.

Cool things to do in Madison (on and around campus):

- State Street
Goes roughly from the Memorial Library all the way up to the state capital building, which is a sight to behold. The dome had to be lowered some years ago as it was actually taller than the one in Wash, DC. State Street is well known for its beer/alcohol and/or food establishments.

- Wisconsin Badgers football & basketball games
Wisconsin is an emerging power in NCAA football and basketball. Wisconsin fans are extremely passionate, especially in the student sections of Camp Randall Stadium (football) and the Kohl Center (basketball). The hockey programs, both men's and women's, have been extremely successful as well. Hockey games are fun.

- Beauty (Bascom Hall/Bascom Hill, the lakes, the Union Terrace, etc.)
Bascom Hall, which sits at the top of Bascom Hill, has a nice statue of Abraham Lincoln in front of it and offers a great view down State Street, including the capital building. The campus is essentially on an isthmus formed by Lake Mendota and Lake Monona, so there's plenty to do if you like water sports. The terrace at the Memorial Union features nice views of Lake Mendota and a relaxed atmosphere in which to chat, drink, eat, study, etc.

- House Parties
There's always a party somewhere, if that's something you like to do.

- Without doing a ton of research, I can tell you that Wisconsin faculty have won something like 13 Nobel Prizes. Geniuses teach at UW. The academic reputation of the University of Wisconsin is up there with virtually any school in the US. Many undergraduate and graduate programs are ranked in the top ten in the country and the PhD offerings at Wisconsin are literally neck and neck with Harvard, Yale, Stanford, etc. In terms of academic rep, Wisconsin is very highly esteemed.

You'll get a great education (at a good price) and have a lot of fun if you go to the University of Wisconsin for your graduate work.

The following sites contain more info about the school, Badger athletics (including some of the songs we sing at the games -- our band is great, with a unique, difficult step nobody else does called "stop at the top"; you must go to a football game if for no other reason than the 5th Quarter):

http://www.uwbadgers.com/traditions/school_songs_121.html

http://www.uwbadgers.com/sport_news/fb/headlines/headlines.html?sportid=111

-- "On, Wisconsin" is the pep song. "Varsity" is the emotional tune sung at least five times -- yes, sung by the fans, especially students and alumni -- at every football game.

Prezbucky, you should have listened in on a phone conversation I recently had with a friend in Florida who has never been north. She said her niece had been attending UW Madison and came down for the summer because "there was nothing to do in Wisconsin". One of her claims was that Wisconsin "has no beaches". I had to inform her that Wisconsin has beaches and beaches and beaches. I think what the girl really missed were beaches with sharks, killer jellyfish and poisonous plankton. The stories she told her aunt about what supposedly doesn't exist in Wisconsin were absolutely hilarious.

ROFL

Cheeseheads enjoy the use of something like 15000 lakes and ponds. Some are pristine, untouched by man's influence... but many have features like sandy beaches, volleyball nets/courts, etc. Floridians do play volleyball occasionally, I presume.

FIBs (don't ask...) from Chicagoland enjoy them too. Then they start bitching about our pizza and other issues...

hehe

Hell, the county where I grew up (Oneida) has something like 500-1000 lakes. The whole northcentral Wisconsin area is loaded with water.

Besides... there's plenty to do in Madison, 'round the clock -- especially if she likes to party. hehe

And the shopping malls (namely East Towne and West Towne) are decent, if memory serves.

Parties -- check
Shopping - check (I think, anyway)
Food - check
Athletic functions (games) - check
Weather - ahhh... might be a problem there, though certainly not in the summer.

We used to go to a place called The Essen Haus to partake in what we perceived to be a German tradition:

drinking boots (filled with beer)

The boot holds, oh, about two pitchers' worth of beer.

The person on your right drinks.

When (s)he is finished, (s)he flicks the boot with a finger and hands it to you.

You say "Danke"

(S)he says "Bitte"

You drink, finish, flick, hand to the next person, speak

If I finish the boot, and you were the person who had the boot before me, it is your responsibility to buy the next boot. That's how we did things, anyway.

I wonder if Germans actually do play a game similar to our boot-drinking game of yore.

Those were the days!
