Hi all

In the sentence "The ESL test was quite difficult, _____ everyone passed."

I find difficult to choose betwen "so" or "yet"

Can you help me... thanks in advance

According Conchita suggestion I think the correct one it is "YET", because "quite difficult" means very difficult as difficult is ungraduable

The ESL test was quite difficult, yet everyone passed
The ESL test was quite difficult, so everyone failed

exactly. if you say the ESL test was quite difficult, yet everyone passed, you're using yet as a synonym of however. another way of saying it could be:
even though/although the ESL test was quite difficult, everyone passed.

the other sentence is: the ESL test was quite difficult so eveyone passed. in that case, you're using so to express a consequence. you could also say:
the ESL test was quite difficult, as a result/that's why everyone failed.

see the difference??
