My hotel students are using "must" to the guests. Are they delivering the right level of language, I mean for the guests at the resort.

A manager suggested I must teach them to use "may have to" in stead of "must".
See one example ny students may have to use

1. If you would like to get there on time, you may need to get up at 6.

if it is so, please tell me why?

Yes, I would suggest that often 'must' is too demanding from a service position, so it would be wiser to select a more indirect form. On the other hand, 'you may need to' is too hesitant. This is a good choice in the situation you present:

If you would like to get there on time, you should get up at 6.

I agree with MM and think that "may need to get up at 6" is a little awkward.
I'd say like this:If you would like to get there on time you have to get up at 6.

I think simply using 'have to' is also too demanding from a service position. I think MM's suggestion with 'should' is your best option, Storm.

Yes, I have nothing to say,but "have to" is better than "must" indeed. When we use "should" it is like giving advice. Wink

'Should" Mon Jul 30, 2007 10:38 am  'Should"

Guests won't feel the demand if my students use "should" then.

Thanks ...

I like you guys, quick and clear.
