I think here there is an assumption that 'instead of' would be followed by seeming merely repulsive.

. Interesting, FF. It is certainly said that way (adjective/adverb instead of adjective/adverb), and commonly-- though we would expect either nouns or rather than. Either it is a very prevalent deviation from the 'rule', or Quirk et al were remiss in failing to include 'instead of' in their list of quasi-coordinators, along with 'rather than', 'as well as', etc. . _________________ Native English teacher at Mister Micawber's |
