Hi Harry,

Why do you think Americans and Russians have such pronunciation difficulties?

First of all they don't have the sound "h" in Russian and they mostly pronounce "kh". There are some other sounds which aren't found in their alphabet, either:{P,K(C),T, J} etc. As to Americans they seem to think that only one language is spoken all aver the world and when it comes to learning a foreign language they do it with a great difficulty. Once an American asked me for the way in Moscow Underground. He was trying to do it in Russian. He was pronouncing the name of the station "Universitetskaya". At last he showed me the map and pointed to it. When I pronounced it he was very surprised. I have a lot of life episodes with Americans when they don't even try to speak another language. This is because English is spoken everywhere in the world. Whereever you go you can find at least one who speaks English and he can help you. Such is Life!

Well Jamie, I was referring to those Americans who are learning Russian -- you were talking about those American with bachelor's degrees in Russian. I think there is a huge difference between both. If you study Russian or any other language at a university in order to get a degree, the likelihood that you are actually learning the language is rather small. You can learn a lot of things at a university but I doubt that you can learn a second language effectively there. The Americans you met were interested in their degrees not the language.

Now you really ARE overgeneralizing. I took a graduate-level German course or two in the States, and the American students were all fluent and rather accurate in German. The same is true of the students studying Spanish.

Hi Harry

I do think that if any language was the "International language", as English is, the people speaking it would speak less other languages. Lets consider if say German has become the native language of America, I really do believe German speakers would not have the motivation to learn another language.

This is nothing against Germans per see, but when it comes down to it we are all inherently lazy.

There is some truth in you statement that Americans do not even try to speak another language; it is true of most English native speakers.

However it would be interesting to see how many EFL trainers have learn?t another language as well as ex-pats, and if this is a significant number in relation to native English speakers.

But many nationalities have laziness when it comes to learning languages.

My Mum for example has not really made any effort to learn German despite my life here in Germany. Granted my Father has retained some German from his three years in Heidelberg, however has not really brushed up on it. I remember being at a cafe near "Check point Charlie" and coming back from the toilet, to see a startled Asian waitress looking dumbfounded at my Mum as she asked for something not on the English-German menu. You could say it was the fault of the cafe for not having staff who could spook English but having a menu in English or my Mum for not ordering in German.

Also I remember a German tourist on a campsite in Portugal who demanded in German to know where the nearest phone box(booth) was and if it took a card. Not only did he not speak Portuguese, but when the camp assistant spoke in very good English, he answered quite politely with "huh".

In both cases I found myself interpreting, at no cost. Of course in the former it was no problem for me.

However I do think that as language teachers we often view things very critically when it comes to learning another language.

I could also state an example of a schoolmate of mine who speaks 6 languages (French, German, Dutch, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese) and is now learning Hindi. She is a lawyer in London, but does not really need them for her job.

So as I said, some truth in your point made. However we can give examples to defend or contradict our opinions. It is worth considering that maybe we in our profession have a somewhat bias view or see thing in a language specific way.

Hi,
from my experience English for sure is very popular but not just everywhere.

Europe (specially in small countries and in Scandinavia, in Africa only in previous English colonies or maybe more precisely not in previous French colonies.
English is very little popular in South America except maybe of Latin America.
In Russia in San Petersburg even waiters may demand from you to use Russian or leave the place ( private experience )
I had seen one Japanese Manager who passing some instructions in English found
saying so difficult that he had switched to Japanese Language and without any shame given entire preach in Japanese (to Audience which complete unknown any Japanese).

If you live everyday with somebody you may found that even English spoken
person after some time refuse to say a word in English.??
If you repeat some question or instructions answer is a bit melancholic like you don't really speak Portuguese/ Spanish /Russian etc
And of course instead immerse back in his mother language.

English is out or range for 80% of world population.
This is a language of some pathetic "elites", school pupils or Dollar lovers
This is not a language of masses , I am afraid it never would be such.

Regards

Jan

Stew, I think you wanted to write "learnt". I know you're often drinking when you post (as you have admitted and as is frequently visible from your writing), but you should at least do a rudimentary spellcheck on what you write before you post it. After all, you present yourself as an English teacher, so you should be setting an example. Everybody makes mistakes from time to time, but we shouldn't be downright sloppy. If you don't want to write your posts in a word processing program and paste them into the browser, I'd suggest using the Firefox or Safari browsers, because they'll highlight your misspellings as you type.

Anyway, on to the comment I wanted to make about the quote above.

My experience is that only a small minority of native anglophone EFL trainers can speak a foreign language, so they don't know what the students are experiencing, and they've never had to perform the mental tasks they are demanding of the students. This causes a lot of problems in their classrooms.

Another problem, which I think might be peculiar to the US, is that a lot of ESL teachers were originally primary school teachers, and they treat their adult students as if they were children. They speak to them the way people speak to children, and they have them perform childish tasks, including some games that are definitely not for adults. The students find this humiliating.

Let's try to think now just about UK.
Even if you would ten times increase French in schools ,even if you add free
courses to all educational parts of system, even if it would be a rule no French
no job, even if you convince everybody that French is worldwide just not in England etc.
What percentage of population do you manage to learn French on some conversation level?
I mean something more than few broken sentences fully of mistakes and
misunderstanding.
I had English cadets high educated native speakers of English language.
They couldn't speak ,make correct conversation or just work with ordinary Filipinos or Indonesians seamen ,seamen whose were more than twenty years
at sea presumably English spoken environment???

Hi Jamie (K)

Firstly a typo is a typo.

Secondly if you do not understand humor, and why I picked up on this drinking subject then you have a short memory and I also suggest taking some lessons in being ironic.

While your at it why not try some consultancy in diplomacy and tact. Private messages are all well and fine but your public criticisms are somewhat annoying my friend. No doubt as always it will fall on deaf ears anyway.

Thirdly although I may agree with you on setting an example, you are no lord and master of this forum, so get off your high horse and watch out for the drop.

Your remarks were not the first indication to me that you are sometimes drunk when you post. The first post I read by you some months ago was nearly unintelligible, and I thought you were a non-native speaker of English. After I read more posts, and I found out you were a native speaker, I realized you were sometimes impaired when you wrote.

Instead of complaining, you could just get off your high horse of indignation, click on the "Edit" button, and correct your English.

Hi Jamie and Stew,

I'd like to step in thank you both for your contributions to the current discussion in which we are trying to find answers to the question how Americans and other native speakers of English learn foreign languages. As we have observed, there are a lot of interesting aspects that relate to these questions and we all understand that we sometimes get sidetracked by personal issues. Jamie has made some value remarks about using Firefox because it allows you install a spell checker so whenever you type a text in your browser, you can rid of any typos in immediately.

Another interesting comment made by Jamie was that only a very small percentage of anglophone English teachers know what it feels like learning a second language. And Stew, you related the experiences you and your parents had when communicating in German.

Maybe we can continue with this discussion?

Hi Jamie K

Well you ears seem to be suffering form that deafness.

The point I take concerning editing.

Your personal jibes are just not appropriate, we can choose to do this in public if you wish.

I have took your criticisms. However you are casting certain remarks that are just not diplomatic.

You do not seem able to see fault in your own communication or mode thereof.

If you wish to keep in insulting me then go ahead, but do not expect me not to respond.

Your attitude is rather condescending, not only to me but also others.

What makes you think you are the sole critique of this forum?

And me being allegedly drunk is just like you being anal, so get over it ; )

Is pedantic criticism your intention or do you want users to see your obvious authority on all you oversee?

Hmmm... From what I can see (I mean the short remark under Stew's avatar), Stew domiciles in German. I always thought that his native language is German. Now, I'm not sure if that's true
I'm very eager to know if Stew is a native English speaker or not.

Hi, Stew

Could you clarify this for me, please :)
