 I'm learning English for communication.

Do you understand Chinese?

Do I understand Chinese? Yes, a little bit. I had learned Chinese for about a year. I like this phrase "Yen Zhi Chu Xing Ben Shan"...hope you can correct me if I'm wrong.

Edison,

I don't understand Mandarin at all, but I can understand Hokkien like 20 or 30% ( I used to speak the language when I was small) and I know by heart the song "Liang Shan Bo Yu Zhu Li Ye" and my favourite phrase is "Nan dao ni bu dong wo de xin?".

So romantic.

Nina

P/S Torsten: Sorry for the off topic!

Nina..Liang Shan Bo Yu Zhu Li Ye.....Nan dao ni bu dong wo de xin...

It's such a shame I knew just what a few words mean after learning one year ago.

wo bu dong...dui bu chi.. :D

Nicholas, no need to apologize. I don't even understand my own heart. :P

In case you were wondering, Liang Shan Bo is the Chinese version of Romeo and guess what, Zhu Li Ye is Juliet.

Edison,

It is a beautiful song, but kind of sad when I read the history of the two lovebirds. Why on earth every couple in a great love story has to die?
I certainly hope I won't have to die once I find my true love.

Thanks very much, Nina. I got it now. In fact, after you told me, I realized that I must have heard it or even watched it on TV:D. To me, "Zhu Li Ye" sounds very much like "Juliet".

To Nina and Nicholas, maybe you can write in Chinese? I can't get it if you use Eng. letters to make Chinese. Why do you learn Chinese? Is it hard for both of you?

To prezbucky, you know about Chinese as well?

Edison, I can just write a few words in Chinese. I have an intention to learn Chinese in the future because I know that Chinese is another useful language besides English because many people speak it and I want to read Chinese literature. (well in the future  )

I dont' think Chinese is hard if I try. There's will, there's way. :D

I only know Japanese Edison, and the Chinese characters that I learnt are the ancient ones. The Chinese now use a simplified ones right? I can pick the meanings here and there but I cannot read it. Some have very similar pronunciation.

And I totally get it when you said you cannot understand it in alphabets, I have the same trouble too. I usually have a pain in the neck when I received emails from small children(my collegue's children). They don't know many Chinese characters yet, so they write mainly in Katakana and Hiragana (Japanese syllabaries). It's harder when I get emails in Japanese but written in alphabets from my foreigner friends.

This is my first time viewing this page for " Why are you learning English "

Very generic and reasonable question and also prompts to this question are well interesting

For me , I have been learning English for decades and still learning .
When look back to my skills , you can decide or judge " still poor " by looking my writings .

As everybody aware that English is essential in business ,education , technology etc etc. , we have understood that the role of English has gradually been increasing and it has become essential part of daily life .

Eventhough , there technology of language converter is now highly appropriated , the role of English is not degraded and even more upgraded .

The reasons why I learn English are simples.
1. To keep abreast with times
2. To communicate effectively with people who are not my native country
3. To enhance and extend my knowledge in different areas
