Jetendra,
I would suggest that as a first step you should read my posts here in this thread, and also in the "So I took the GRE today thread" very carefully b/c there is a lot of information there already. It is extremely difficult for me to help you because I don't know anything about you. You will have noticed that everyone who wrote to me gave me some background e.g. information relating to what they are doing, trying to do, and specific problems that they have. If you still need my help after that, I am happy to give it, but I don't want to give away my personal work to someone I don't know; I hope you will appreciate this.
Also, while formalities are not required here per se, I think that being gracious when asking for help is something rather important. I think its pretty clear from this thread that I do respond to people directly and in a timely way. Thus I think its rather odd that you would ask princess for my materials instead of me. Even though I am really busy at the moment, I take a lot of time out to help quite a few people here in this forum and in a very detailed and personalized way; as someone has remarked, it is not everyday that someone who has already COMPLETED the GRE would bother to do this. I hope you will appreciate this too.
Good luck in your studies! |

Jetendra,
Which parts of verbal are you worried about? Have you attempted some questions? Done a diagnostic? What scores do you need? If you don't know, you should ask to give yourself a realistic goal and peace of mind. Do start learning vocab; top words first, then use the blog to supplement. Also note down words you don't know in the questions you do and make a list for yourself (also note similar words - synonyms- and antonyms on the same page for ease of reference). I'll give you more specific advice when you tell me more about your problems. Sorry for the short post; I am moving house right now and will be quite busy the next few weeks. I will, however, continue to check and give you suggestions. Please bear with the brevity of my responses for now.
Hope to hear again from you in due course. |

Jetendra please see this post for my tips.
Dear Nazeedzia,
Thank you for kind words. Vocab is a tricky thing, but hopefully my method will work for you.
I am a free associate, so what I mean is that when I learn a word, I try to contextualize it or connect it to something I already know. For example, OBDURATE means resistant to persuasion, and hardened in feeling so I associated it with my horrible boss from before. Or, take the word PREVARICATE which means to deceive; notice that it has the word VARY in it, so you can associate that with "varying from the truth." For something like MALEVOLENT, I thought of the evil witch character in the Disney movie Sleeping Beauty because she has a similar, if not the same name. The same applies to UMBRAGE, which means offence, and when you remember the Harry Potter character, you see how you can remember that offensive person's characteristic. Does this help?
Sometimes word roots help. For example, if you know that BEL means war, you can get BELLICOSE = warlike. This is not a hard and fast rule, but if you have the time, knowing the roots can help with memorizing actual words.
These are the techniques I used and unfortunately sometimes you will have to rely on memory alone. Seeing it used in a sentence may help you, so check unfamiliar words on dictionary.com or other dictionary websites.
Good luck studying! And all the best for the GRE!
|

Hi Lazzy,
Before i do, can you please tell me something about yourself, especially what you are doing currently for the GRE? Please also tell me what problems you are having with verbal. Whether the list is helpful will depend on the preparation that you have done. |

Hi Dakini, I am sorry not introducing myself. Well, I am now a master student in Life Science. I will complete my Ms degree next year. After that I plan to take the TOEFL and the GRE exams (maybe in Jun 2008). I have just started learning GRE for two weeks. Now I jut try to learn verbal as much as possible. I have been learning verbal on the website that Dynamite mentioned (including Barrons word list, and Kaplan word list). To tell you the truth, I also don't know how I should start in order to have my best result. Could you give me an advice. Thank you in advance. |

Hi Princess,
Thanks a lot for your reply.......actually I am kind of confused and can't really understand how should I pace myself. It's very difficult learning an entire word list a day, but I try hard to do so. This leaves me with hardly any time for essays. I really need to emphasize on my writing skill now as only 9 weeks are left.
Please help me out on how to improve my writing and how many hours should I spend everyday for studying for GRE, at a minimum!!!!!
Good luck & thank you all......... |
