. Your #1 seems wrong to me. I don't believe 'forbid...from' is acceptable. . _________________ Native English teacher at Mister Micawber's |

. We'll have to wait and see, but I checked my comment in the BBI collocation dictionary, and that's BrE.
Ms Google reveals for all domains:
102,000 English pages for "forbid to" 9,520 English pages for "forbid from". . _________________ Native English teacher at Mister Micawber's |

Hi Jan
Like Mr. Mic, I feel uncomfortable with your first sentence. A search of the BNC for "forbade him from" produces only one result: Courtesy forbade him from asking the reason for this unexpected visit.
A search in the BNC for "forbid him from" gets 2 results.
A search for "forbade him to" produces 7 results, and "forbid him to" gets 8.
So, not many results for any of them.
However, a search for passive forms produces this: - "Was forbidden to" gets a whopping 42 results. - "Was forbidden from" gets only 2. . _________________ "Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power." ~ Abraham Lincoln |
