Operation systems: What operation system runs on your computer? #1 (permalink) Wed Aug 08, 2007 20:00 pm   Operation systems: What operation system runs on your computer?

Hi there
What operation system runs on your computer?
Are you content with it, with its perfomance, does it slow eveything down on your computer?
And what way did you get your OS ? (I mean, how and where did you buy it )

I just watched a video on Vista and they say it is horrid (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0sy2i5FMcI)
recently I downloaded a 180 trial version of Windows 2003 from Microsoft and will make do with it for another half a year. If it proves to be OK I'll proably consider buying it.

looking forward to hearing from you soon, bye :)

You should not get higher than XP. VISTA slows every system down, and it shifts too much responsibility on the user. If you run an older system (anything older than 4 years), you are probably better off using Windows 2000 ME. The crux here is that you will find it hard to get more recently developed updates, though.

Oh, thanks, Ralf. I asked others of my friends and they said it's also better to use Windows 98. Thanks for your suggestion, Windows ME. Perhaps, to use an older version of Windows helps fix some trouble in the computer easily.

Windows 2000 and Windows ME are 2 completely different OSs
I dont reccommend anyone use Windows less than 2000 (i.e. 95, 98, ME) because the security implementation in them is terrible. You can easily destroy those OS (or get invaded by malicious programs).

I think Windows XP is the best choise.

Hi, Nicholas
If you have a modern computer (you RAM is or more than 256 MB. HDD >60 GB and CPU is P3 or 4) I really dont recommend that you use ME. Its security sucks.

Haha, Lost_Soul, that is even worse. My RAM is only 224 and the HDD is less than 60 GB. And it's CPU P4.
Thanks.

Don't you feeel the letters on Vista really looked like more clearly than Windows? (maybe it's the only advantage of it)

I don't really know whether you can get "224 MB" RAM, but that's probably the figure you get from your system. You most likely seem to have 256 MB RAM installed, so my suggestion would be to get yourself another 512 MB RAM (~?30), that should give your computer wings. It's dead easy to hook up!

Unless you haven't yet done it, you should also defragment your harddisk. You can find the option "defragmentation" as you get into accessories on your START - PROGRAMMS panel.

Good luck!

lost_soul,

Not to be a kill-joy, I think the usual expression would be operating system.

By the way, mine is XP Professional 2002. It came along with the laptop my father bought me as a birthday present.

A desktop I bought myself runs Windows 2000. I was doing my first year at the university and I picked all the specs that I wanted and built it up myself. Seriously, it is not that cheaper from a ready-to-use desktop, but I did it for the sake of doing it.

And I am not so sure, VISTA used to be horrid, when it made its first debut, but the improved version is not that bad, but it is not that WOW either. The lay out is nicer though, than XP.

I think it's all a question of time. Sooner or later almost everybody will start using Vista and older OS versions like Windows 2000 will become obsolete just like Windows 95 has almost entirely disappeared from the computer world. So you can delay your purchase of Vista but you can't avoid it.
