Salute! my name is Cathrin. I'm actually German Mon Jan 10, 2005 23:44 pm  Salute! my name is Cathrin. I'm actually German

Hi ya,

my name is Cathrin. I'm actually German but since August I've felt pretty British. The reason is that since this date I've done an European Voluntary Service in Loughborough, UK. My duty is to take care for physical disabled students and withouth talking big I'm pretty good in my metier.
To be honest I chose Great Britain to improve my English and after a few months you can hear that I was successful...my problem is that you can't really read it.

I do read a lot of stuff, everything I can get actually and I do have emailcontact with Englishspeaking people but as you know in your mother-tongue after a while it develops a kind of a slang which simplifies every second word to something obscure (especially people from Asian countries do cruel things to poor poor English ;P)

I'm totally open-minded for any piece of advice you can give how I can improve my written English (especially from the professional side Smile)

Thanks for being here,
Cathrin

Dear Cathrin,

So you have been living in the UK for quite a while and it definitely shows. You can express your thoughts very efffectively and with humour. When are you returning to Germany?

26th April is my deadline.

One of my client, Colin, insulted my for this information heavily. His semester goes to the 17th of June and he can't really get it why I can't accompany him to the end. The end of my service does not mean that Colin or any other one of my clients is helpless. Actually, I only take care for Colin at the weekend, over the week another person (a in German so-called "Zivi", a young man who has the duty to go either to the Army or to do a Civil Service). But as you might not believe Colin does like me much more Razz; so he had his 5min-desperation the other day followed by endless seeming curses.
As you can see it is wonderful to be here.

The other day I found out that my sevice is much shorter as I thought (have thought?). I undersigned a contract for eight months. I'm allowed to have one week off after absolved 4 months...but...I work on campus for students. These students have holidays and go home. That was the case at Christmas and is the same situation around Easter. The speciality is that this named holiday takes one month long!!! It's bloody amazing (oops).
For this holiday I planned, of course Mummy, to return to Germany to take some of my enormous stuff home but also to travel around in England, Scotland and Wales. That's pretty expensive and as a poor volunteer who is not paid for this hard work this is pretty hard. But hey...let's play.

When I come back from my UK-trip I only work two weeks and my service is done. It's a bit sad because I do have a lot of international friends on campus but it is as well exciting seeing my life changing and going on in a totally different direction.

Thank you for attention
