How many apartments have in one floor of the building?

I read the meaning of the apartment in many dictionaries. But I still can't quite understand it. I wonder how much apartments used to have in one floor. That might help me to grasp the meaning of apartment.

Please help me.

Hi LE

An apartment is a place to live and there is more than one apartment in a building. Depending on the size of the building, there could be just one apartment on each floor, or there could be many.

I believe the British would use the word 'flat' where an American would use the word 'apartment'. Do you understand the word 'flat'?

An apartment is place you rent to live within a building. A condo is just like an apartment except you buy and own it. An apartment typically has one entry door, a living room, 1 or more bedroom(s), a bathroom and a kitchen. A floor may have many apartments. An apartment without a separate bedroom is usually called a Studio.

Yes. I think British use the word "flat" for "apartment".

I still have one more doubt :
I think, actually, one apartment or one flat means one single house in the building. Am I right?
Please help me.

Hi LE

To me a house is a free-standing building and an apartment is not.
