What sound really drives you up the wall? Fri Aug 17, 2007 8:52 am  What sound really drives you up the wall?

Hi,

There are several expressions indicating that you are really annoyed about something. Something can drive you up the wall/round the bend. It can get on your nerves. I can tip you over the edge. It can make you want to scream. So what sound/noise does that to you? Is it the sound of loud music when you're trying to sleep? Is it the barking of a dog? Is it a car alarm? Is it the sound of someone opening a sweet paper when you're watching a play in the theatre?

HI Alan,

What sound irrirates me the most is the sound that makes my heart beat so hard after it and doesn't help me relax. Evil or Very Mad Laughing

I don't mind many of the sounds that bother most people. Fingernails clawing down a blackboard don't bother me, for example. Of the many sounds that irritate me a lot, one of them is the screeching violins in the soundtrack of an old Bollywood or Egyptian movie. I also find Hillary Clinton's voice very irritating, but only in speeches where she's loud and trying to sound "powerful". When I was a kid, my mother had a way of calling us for dinner that almost made your skull crack. I don't have to hear that anymore, except when my younger sister does a very adept imitation of it for "fun".

Hiya,
I think music can bring us beautiful sounds, and help us relax. But if your neighbor plays violin at 14:00 pm almostly everyday you will take it as a kind of honor and enjoyment? In the past two years he 's been playing one song, never tried others. Now I have to say that some music can kill pepple too, or is that what a real artist must experience? I hope he will be a great musican someday, otherwise I have to consider to move somewhere else.......

hmmm....

- My ex-girlfriend's voice when she yells at me (don't ask)
- "The Chicago Bears have scored a touchdown..." (or any variation on that theme)
- The popping sound my right ankle makes on about half the steps I take (I broke it playing football years and years ago -- it doesn't hurt at all, but makes that damnable noise).

Interesting. I have a sports-induced knee crunch when descending the stairs. It also doesn't hurt, and I've started to think of the sound as a close friend.

Maybe we should start stocking up on the glucosamine/chondroitin pills. hehe

I have a feeling I have at least minor joint arthritis in my future -- dislocated shoulder, broken ankle, half-gone meniscus, etc.

The ankle and shoulder were football-related injuries. The torn meniscus in my right knee (and resulting arthroscopic surgery -- three little holes -- to remove half of it) was due to a drunken post-party wrestling match, with someone who outweighs(or -ed) me by about 50 pounds. Of course we were good friends. lol

I went to Cancun, played beach volleyball on that knee for a whole summer -- thinking it was a strain. The doctor did an MRI and told me the cartilage was torn. My reaction was "huh". I was flabbergasted.

I can empathize, to some degree, with baseball players who play the position of catcher.
