meaning of phrases: scream over; concussive report #1 (permalink) Sun Aug 19, 2007 13:21 pm   meaning of phrases: scream over; concussive report

Hello everyone.

I'd like to ask a question about 2 phrases in the following passage.

The tank screamed over the ridge, crushing the grass and bamboo under its treads, guns blazing as it spit bullets and shells into the large temple and its occupants...

The concussive report of the tank's weapons echoed into the night, even as dozens of GDI troops ran in front of the tank in order to secure the remains of the building.

As far as I understand the phrase 'screamed over' means that the tank was moving making a loud noise. What is unclear to me is the direction: was the tank moving along the ridge or across the ridge.

And what is the concussive report? I think that 'concussive report' here is the sounds of firing, but I'm not sure.

That's right, KLPNO. And the use of the word 'concussive' adds feeling to the sound. It's so loud that everything shakes.

You're welcome, KLPNO.

I forgot to address your question about 'scream over', though. A ridge is a kind of hill, and if something "screams over a hill", it goes/moves over the top of the hill, and the movement is probably fast and loud.
