is GRE really that important

first of all, thank you for your patience of reading this topic.

i am taking the GRE general tomorrow.
it is a big shame that i am just too lazy to do any preparation.
i have done couple example tests, scoring very low vebal scores 250-350,
but math scores are ok, 750-800, since i am math major.
i am applying for the same school where i am currently studying,(U of illinois at Chicago).
my GPA is ok, about 3.8 aggregate, and 4.0 math.
and i believe i will be recommanded by my professors of the math department.
oops, i almost forget to say the program.
i am apply for mathematics.

meanwhile, with this ashamed GRE score but a well-performance at school.
will the low GRE score keep me away from the admission?

I would imagine that if your verbal score ends up being less than 300, then yes, it's going to hurt you. If you bomb it tomorrow, cancel the score before they show it to you, and get off your butt and study for it and retake.

Yep. I think GRE may not appear any but only present your ability for coping with one thing which can impact your admission available and everyone hates to do it at least.

I recently met with the department head of the MA program assistantship I'm applying for. I'm an older student and have several years of experience in the discipline. The department head told me with my 4.0 GPA, stellar letters of recomendation and my related work experience, I shouldn't worry too much about a lower GRE score as long as it didn't fall too far below 900.

I posted several weeks ago I took a practice GRE and got a 900; just about freaked (I've not studied geometry for years!). But I've been studying hard since then and am planning on taking the actual test around November 1.

Of course, I recognize this department head's comment can't be construed as representing all masters programs, but it's one example of how other strengths may offset a lower GRE....thank goodness!

IF YOU APPLY MASTER DEGREE SOME OF THE UNIVERSITIES LIKE GMU.EDU AND CU.EDU DO NOT REQUIRE GRE SCORE. YOU CAN ENTER THE GRADUATE SCHOOL SO EASY. WHY NOT.
