Dear Mr Alan, I'm a teacher of English and now I wonder how I can speak English as a native speaker? At my secondary school in which all students are selected, they are very good at science subjects. However spoken English is not very good. As a teacher of English everyday I just can teach them grammar knowlede mainly. They don't have a chance to communicate with a foreiner, because I think that this is very important for those who want to learn to improve speaking- pnonunciation. Even all the teacheres have never had any chances to come to the places or the surroundings where they can speak English. Please give me some advice on this. Thank you very much. |

Hi Alan, I got your newsletter today. It's very amusing; I enjoyed the read.
That said, I wonder how many beginning/intermediate ESL students get the humor. |

Dear Nguyen Thi Thanh Thu,
Many thanks for your question. If you want to speak like a native speaker, you have to listen to native speakers on a daily basis. How much time do yo spend watching CNN, BBC, DVD's, etc. and listening to audio books every day? It should be at least 3 hours, better 5 or 6 hours. You can play audio books in the background while you are doing something else. What do you give your students to listen to? How often do you communicate with native speakers via Skype, Paltalk, etc? _________________ Test Of English for International Communication TOEIC Preparation & TOEIC Vocabulary |

hi! I'm really over the moon when i read this piece of stuff very interesting and also overriding. It really enhanced my idiomatical expressions because i'm really willing to learn them.We see that english is an international language because many words from many others languages are immersed in english.
My big problem since i started learning this so beautiful language of shakespeare is the listening.I can listen very well what my teacher is saying and it doesn't matter if he is a native speaker or not. But,when there is a tape which is talking i sometimes got confused.Furthermore, the pronounciation is also one of the big problem i'm facing so how to do master it very well ?
I'm a student of english at the british council in my country so i'm so happy to learn to learn english because my aim is to reach the level 8 and tackle the cambridge english proficiency
The newsletter was very good thanks so much free rein thomas |

| Nice... I studied everything at the University, but it wasn't so funny! I also laughed a lot reading the first pages of "Asterix in Britain" when the Romans realize that they can conquer England at five o'clock, because British people are busy in drinking hot water with some milk... (tea didn't exist). |

Dear Thomas,
Many thanks for your positive feedback -- it's always great to hear from people who like Alan's materials. You say that you have difficulty understanding spoken English. Could you please tell me how much time you spend listening to English and what exactly you listen to?
