Hi,

I have come across a few more expressions in the following passages.

Quote:
Mr Bloom turned his largelidded eyes with unhasty friendliness. (V, Ulysses)

1. Does it suggest his eyes then nearly closed?

Quote:
Didn't catch me napping that wheeze. The quick touch. Soft mark. I'd like my job.

2. Is the whole part saying: That wheeze (suggesting a trick) didn't catch me when I was napping (off guard). I had the quick touch to see through the trick. He saw me as a soft mark (an easy target) to aim or shoot at. However, I did my job quite well in getting rid of his trick. ?

Quote:
Nice kind of evening feeling. No more wandering about. Just loll there: quiet dusk: let everything rip.

3. Does this mean: let everything rest in peace.?

Thank you!

Haihao, I don't have time to look up the context of all your questions on Ulysses, so my comments from here on will usually be just my offhand opinion, given the text you have provided:

1. Does it suggest his eyes then nearly closed?-- I think it rather describes his usual physiognomy-- at least, that is part of my image of Bloom.

2. That wheeze (suggesting a trick) didn't catch me when I was napping (off guard). I have the quick touch to see through such a trick. I can identify a soft mark (an easy target) to aim or shoot at. I would enjoy that kind of work.

3. Let everything happen as it is going to happen.

Your offhand opinion would be just as helpful to me, Mister Micawber. My questions (too many, I am afraid) are mostly from my lack of confidence in correctly understanding the English expressions themselves.

Many thanks again!
