Hi LS,

The addition of 'to' with 'on' is the same as the addition of 'to' with 'in' and it indicates movement. Both your sentences make sense but 'onto' stresses the idea of adding to.

In a simpler sentence we have: We walked onto the bridge indicating that we went from the pavement to the bridge and :We walked on the bridge indicating that we were already there on the bridge and that's where we walked.
