GRE Essay: Colleges should eliminate as many choices as possible Mon Aug 27, 2007 21:10 pm  GRE Essay: Colleges should eliminate as many choices as possible

Hello!
I'm here again. I have begun my preparation for the GRE writing. Cool
I believe that it's the most appropriate part of the forum to post any essays.
Please correct them or advise me if you will.

Question:
College students—and people in general—prefer to follow directions rather than make their own decisions. Therefore, colleges should eliminate as many choices as possible in order to offer students clear direction.

Answer:
There are two possible ways of a person’s development: on the one hand he is able to follow the common path, on the other, he could choose the individual way of life. I believe that both approaches are appropriate, but I quite disagree with preposition about eradication of manifold possible choices for students. Everyone should find his own purpose in the society and the aim of universities is to broaden the freedom in choosing.

Certainly, it’s much easier to follow directions because you don’t have to think a lot about all curvatures of the way and you know approximately a final result. When you are studying to become a dentist, you could predict the future wage and social status and it’s quite safe to invest in such education. However, freshmen, usually, can’t predict their future interests and it’s very important for colleges to provide a broad variety of subjects for them. One specific example happened with my classmate at the University, where I studied. He wasn’t very sedulous student, he didn’t like a lot of courses and he had low marks, but he had become the best one in Computer Graphics class. Since our specialty was Robotics, it was strange for others to learn Computer Graphics as an obligatory subject, but not for him. Because of this diverse curriculum he has found his own life way and now he is an employee in one of the best companies in our country, which produces computer games.

I can’t argue that a college’s faculty should be the mentors for the students and light for them in caves of science. Moreover, they have to advise them how to improve their performance and become more successful in future careers. However, it’s impossible to invent another word instead “Orwellian” to characterize restrictions, mentioned in the statement. Most of people consider colleges as the asylums of free-thinking; many students attend them not to learn something about very narrow area of knowledge, but rather to diversify their experience and make up their mind about future plans.

Some departments provide education, appropriate for a specific employer. It’s great, because students acquire specific knowledge and they don’t worry about future employment. But such certainty restricts the students’ experience; they don’t participate in various interviews, they don’t talk with potential employers and they are unable to do so effectively in advance. I suggest, that despite on specialty, a student have to be given manifold experience to become more successful employee and to find the occupation where he could use specific talents in the most effective way.

Many people believe that certainty and stability is the basis of a safe and happy life. On the one part they are right, but I consider my life as the way of permanent self-development and struggle. That’s why, although I pay attention to my mentor’s advice, I want to determine who I’m and who I’ll be by myself.

Summoning, you know, is a great band
