What is the meaning of this phrase?

"That is something you do not want to do"

I do not really understand what the meaning of "to want to" is in this context.

I have heard it so many times.

Here's another example:
"James is a friend you really want to have".

Hi Druitaly and welcome to the forum.

I'd paraphrase your sentences this way:

That is something you shouldn't do
James is a friend you should really have
