Hi, Jamie
You know, there are lots of people who've no idea what a computer is. I witnessed a cashier who was stuck with the message box with only ONE button - OK - she had to hold up the line to confer with her more experienced colleague after which she did press the only button. _________________ Alex

It's funny you asked this question. I just had a "tug of war" (if I can call it that) with my senior over using or not using the mouse.
I am used to using a touchpad and it drives everybody in the office crazy. They do not understand why I find it easier that way. From the first day I got my laptop until today people still ask me why.
Now, this senior, we work together from time to time so he needs to go over my desk and work with me, or I him. Today, is one of the days that we need to work together a lot. So every time he needed to use my laptop he grumbled because he was not used to using the touchpad.
He got fedup and asked me to plug the mouse. I did that, but everytime I use the laptop myself, I unplugged it again, and again, and again.
As a last resort, he plugged it on the USB port at the back of the laptop so it would be difficult for me to unplug it. But, to his disappoinment, I kept on unplugging it and told him, "Hey, I can do this forever."
He gave up, shaked his head and said, "Kawatta ko da naa...", literally, "What a weird child..." _________________ Okotteru Papa mo suki dakedo, nikoniko yasashii Papa ha mo~tto suki! |

Well, in countries where people don't say "OK" very much, it can be confusing.
Macintoshes were the first computers to have a Czech and Slovak (and Ukrainian) operating systems, so they had to resolve some interesting problems. One of them was that they had to find a word to use instead of "OK", because, at least at that time, it was unusual for Czechs and Slovaks to say that word.
To solve the problem, they resurrected the archaic word "budi?", which means "let there be..." Nobody used this word anymore in everyday life, but in the book of Genesis, in the Bible, when God is creating the world, he says, "Let there be light!" which in Czech is, "Budi? světlo!"
So on a Czech Macintosh, instead of just agreeing with the computer and saying "OK", you were commanding it in the same word God uses in the Bible. It was very funny, but now Czech and Slovak computers just use the Czech word for "Yes", which I find boring. |

Ooooo! That would drive me crazy too. I avoid using the touchpad, because I can't stand the texture of it. It bothers me to have my finger go across that texture.
In art school I was supposed to draw with charcoal for a lot of the first year, but I refused. I couldn't stand rubbing my hand against that rough paper. It drove me crazy! Same thing with touchpads. |

The two languages are very similar, except that Czech has a more complicated grammar.
Plus, people in that country have a tendency to blurt out things in Russian. For example, when a machine or some other object breaks because it was poorly made, they say, "Бот техника большая!"
They also have some jokes about Russians. In one of them, two Russians are sitting in the same train compartment. One starts a conversation: "Куда вы едете?" His companion answers, "Я еду из Ленинграда в Москву, а вы?" The other responds, "Я еду из Москвы в Ленинград." They stare at each other surprised for a very long time, and then shout out, "Бот техника!"
During Stalin's time, there was always a lot of propaganda coming out that claimed that almost anything you can think of was first invented by a Russian, but that some Westerner merely got the patent first. For this reason Czechs have a lot of jokes about which Russian inventor invented what. For example, they say that Рентген Рентгенович Рентгенов discovered X-rays while chasing his wife around the apartment, screaming, "WHEN I FINISH WITH YOU, THEY'LL SEE RIGHT THROUGH YOU!" Or that Жилет Жилетович Жилетов came up with the safety razor while searching through the garbage behind the American embassy. |

I forgot to mention one thing. I feel like slapping the hands of people who type noisily.
Seriously, the keyboard is designed so that you need not type like you're using the old typewriter where you really need to push each button heartily. _________________ Okotteru Papa mo suki dakedo, nikoniko yasashii Papa ha mo~tto suki! |

You would slap my hands, because I type noisily mainly because I have a tendency toward large gestures. |

Jamie,
I'd be tempted but trust me, I will not slap your hands but I would probably say, "You'll need a new keyboard next month." _________________ Okotteru Papa mo suki dakedo, nikoniko yasashii Papa ha mo~tto suki! |
