That's kind of an odd sentence, Tom.

How about this instead:

The width of the board is about the same as the distance between Tom and me right now.

Maybe somebody else will have some other suggestions for you.

Sometimes additional context helps.

When I answered your question initially, I assumed you referring to a game board for some reason. So that's why I recommended using the word width -- a game board usually has sides and corners rather than ends, the length and width are frequently either the same or not much different, and there isn't much distance from side to side.

Of course, there are also boards in a PC... but nowadays they're pretty minuscule.

If, however, the board you are referring to is a long piece of wood -- say 4 feet long -- then it would be more appropriate to talk about ends (and the length) -- so I'm now assuming that you probably mean that type of board.

You can say 'as much as', but I think people would tend to say 'the same as' instead.
