Last time I overheard somebody mentione red moon. Have you ever heard about it? Red moon seems to indicate HARVEST in English. It confuses me vey much because in my mind a red moon among dark clouds in the evening is scaring and bloody. How could such a terrible scene relates to harvest?

Is red moon really represent harvest in western culture?

By the way I know there is bluemoon which refers to the second full moon in one month.

BTW Do you know any other common phrashes including 'MooN'?

I've seen "Red Moon" used by writer Wilbur Smith (in one of his books set in ancient Egypt) to signify the monthly menstrual period of the human female.

WOW! You know what, that was my first thought when I saw aleaf started this topic because in my culture the "red moon" is usually used to refer to the period when a woman is having her monthly cycle.

A common occurrence in my household:

My father: What's wrong with her?

My mother: Red moon.

Laughing

I don't think the usage is correct though, because we usually have our mood swings before the "red moon".

hehe

yeah, that's the time (of the month) I try to keep my mouth shut and just nod.

In your case it would be:

"Yes, Nina."

"I agree, Nina."

"Sure, I'll water the flowers again, Nina."

"Tofu pie with Brussels sprouts sounds great, Nina."

"What? You want to watch HGTV? Well... yes, Nina."

...so on and so forth.

hehe

I still remember once upon a time when I was still in junior high school, my mathematics teacher cried out-maybe I should call the sound wailing- in the corridor after she failed to draw our attention to calss several times. You know many of us weren't interested in mathematics at all and such similar visions of students making noises in her class had happened many times but only that time she had such a violent response. At that time I didn't understand why she behaved so scaring. It was the red moon that worked, I believe now.Shocked
My uncle who is a farmer told me that red moon indicated there would be a rainstorm in the next day.
I googled the net and didn't find any information that red moon was related to harvest. Maybe i misheard it.

There is this English saying:

Red sky at night, sailor's delight.
Red sky in the morning, sailor take warning.

The same saying also exists in German. I suppose whether it will be rainy or sunny tomorrow would be interesting or important to farmers as well. So I guess it wouldn't be too surprising to find similar sayings in quite a few languages.

hehehehehe I think in ancient time people across the world accumulated life experience from years of observation on nature.
Most old sayings are very accurate.
Eg in china we say 八月十五云遮月,正月十五雪打灯which literally means A cloudy night on the Mid-Autaum Festival predicts a snowy day on the Latern Festival> Although it isn't 100% accurate,it came true one or two years in my memories.
