Hi Torsten

I feel sure there are many other regular forum members who are just as curious as I am about what has been going on here in the last 24 hours.

I was unable to call up this site on my browser starting yesterday evening (US time) and also earlier today. Now it's finally possible again, but I have also noticed that all of the posts from Sept. 8th (yesterday) have vanished, and all of the ones from the 9th were posted late in the day. Did the site get hacked or something? Shocked

Same here, Amy

I could not log onto the forum all day (Pakistani time). I am also worried what happened to all the posts.

Hi, Amy

The most amazing thing is that my brand-new avatar got erased from the DB. - i have to make do with what is in the DB by default
Although I don't think hackers have anything to do with it - it is not a bank Laughing - probably some maintenance tasks went wrong or some of the HDDs got screwed...

Hi,

Amy was right in suggesting that our site got hacked. Unfortunately, some very bad person hacked our server and removed all data from there. We are now trying to restore everything including the forum. However, it is quite possible that some forum posts are gone forever and we'd like to apologize for that.

Hi Alex
You know, I don't think hackers necessarily aim at hacking only things such as banks. Inexperienced "beginner" hackers must certainly start "small" (with things such as forums) and work their way up to the "big time" and the big challenges (banks, governments, etc). It seems to me that websites often get hacked purely for the hacker's own infantile entertainment, but I also can't help but wonder whether someone who would hack this site might have a specific personal "reason" for doing so. Maybe it was someone who didn't like being told to use a dictionary, for example. Rolling Eyes

Actually, I meant "all of the posts from September 8th" and "some of the posts from September 7th". Look at the posts in each forum, Alex. There are some posts for September 7th, but the only ones left are the ones which were posted very early on that day. And can you find even one single post from the 8th? As far as I can tell, they're all gone. Vanished into thin air! Shocked

Oh, what a nuisance to see the forum hacked. Crying or Very sad Luckily, not a large amount of posts have vanished(as far as I can see).

P.S. Alex, what a pretty avatar you've got after hacking! It commends itself to me even better than the previous one. Laughing

Hi Torsten

Tell us about the maximium damage that person could cause to the forum--I mean how much data could we possibly lose? We have very precious posts and PMs here. Would you say that they are all safe?

Tom

PS: Amy, for this very fear I started this.

Hi Tom,

The cockles of my heart are warmed, my sensitivities are touched and a tender tear is almost shed at the idea you are squirrelling away the gems we offer you in our comments and answers. Dare I say it? Should I be so bold? Yes, I will. You are, as it were, the Boswell to us Johnsons! If, but nay it will never happen but you have to face the blackest scenario, a time should come when some evil hacker will obliterate english-test, a voice will be heard crying out saying: All is not lost. I have the records locked away in a cave! And it will be our Tom who has saved the day.

Forgive my spoofy post.

Keep up the good work.

Alan

Hi Tom,

As you can see the forum is up and running again and we'll try to restore any posts that might have been lost. The incident last weekend taught us yet another lesson in security and in the future we will be even better prepared for such attacks. The most important element of the forum are the people who like sharing their ideas and experiences. Since nobody can control our thoughts, the forum is very very safe. We'll find the technical means to make the community run even more smoothly. Thanks a lot for your support and interesting suggestions.
