Which one is correct?

1. He travels into the space
2. He travels into space

What is the grammar rule here?

I'll give it a shot.

In your case you should not use "the"
He travels into space
because you're talking about the universe
I guess you can also say
He travels into the universe

Although, you have to use "the" in some cases, as in "The space required for the machinery is big".

Right, when you use 'space' to talk about the universe, you should not use 'the'.
