First you need an infinitive form of a verb to complete the sentence. You should choose hear because you are talking about the ability to hear. The sentence in fact means: He behaves as if he can't hear but in fact he can hear and he ubderstands everything that is said. _________________ English as a Second Language You can read my ESL story Present Simple |

correct sentence: He sometimes pretends he can't hear a single word you are saying but all the time he's taking it all in.
Correct answer: (c) hear
Your answer was: incorrect your sentence: He sometimes pretends he can't listen to a single word you are saying but all the time he's taking it all in.
Translate sentence or define "hear"
Can I use "listen to" in the sentense ? Thanks in advance |

Well, it would be grammatically correct but the sentence wouldn't make any sense.

Hello my dear teachers,
Thank you very much for yours explanations. Now I really understood all shades between HEAR and TO LISTEN TO. Yours examples and elucidations (Can I use in this sentence this word or it will be better if I'd said "explanations"?) are great and very useful. At first I've got a lot mistakes in the test, because of misunderstanding of two meanings, but with the second attempt I've got 9/10.
P.S. My advice to begginers - to read all explanations, even if your answer was correct. I recomend you to do it, because you can find some interesting things, which you didn't know before.
Best regards, Victoria |

What does "he's taking it all in" mean?
In this context it means -- he is listening to the talk. _________________ First lesson - English, not english. I, not i. ~A student of English |

| I think it was tricky .I interpret that the sentence is saying he pretends he doesn't listen and he doesn't care but in fact he loves you and listens to whatever you say |

Hello Torsten I got this answer correct and I understand the meaning of "talking it all in" in this sentence but, can you give some examples of its use in other contexts please?
Thank you! |
