First you need an infinitive form of a verb to complete the sentence. You should choose hear because you are talking about the ability to hear. The sentence in fact means: He behaves as if he can't hear but in fact he can hear and he ubderstands everything that is said.

Well, it would be grammatically correct but the sentence wouldn't make any sense.

Thank you a lot! #6 (permalink) Sat Jun 20, 2009 2:35 am   Thank you a lot!

Hello my dear teachers,

Thank you very much for yours explanations. Now I really understood all shades between HEAR and TO LISTEN TO. Yours examples and elucidations (Can I use in this sentence this word or it will be better if I'd said "explanations"?) are great and very useful. At first I've got a lot mistakes in the test, because of misunderstanding of two meanings, but with the second attempt I've got 9/10.

P.S. My advice to begginers - to read all explanations, even if your answer was correct. I recomend you to do it, because you can find some interesting things, which you didn't know before.

Best regards,
Victoria

What does "he's taking it all in" mean?

In this context it means -- he is listening to the talk.
