Can you fall prey to an illusion? #1 (permalink) Fri Sep 14, 2007 13:00 pm   Can you fall prey to an illusion?

Hi,

Sometimes I have phrases in my head without being sure how "English" they really are. Here is one of them: Don't fall prey to the illusion that....

Now, could you please tell me how this phrase sounds like to your ears?
Thanks a lot,
Torsten

Hi Torsten,

To my dull ears, it sounds like Don't be captured by the illusion that.... I wonder if it could be similar to Don't fall in love with sb./sth. = Don't fall prey to sb./sth. but I am not sure.

Hi Torsten

I see no reason why you couldn't say that.

What sort of illusion were you thinking of falling prey to? :o

Well, you're right to a point. Falling in love with smbd who will take advantage of you (which usually happens) is similar to falling prey to that smbd. :)

BTW, I just found out that pray and prey sound alike. Like any pray should pray for its life :)

Just out of curiosity tickled by your homonyms, Alex, my dictionary says 'pray' is from the Latin 'preca' (prayer) and 'prey' from 'praeda' (booty).

Gone through a lot of heartache already, haven't you?

I wanted to disagree with your cynic comment, but, who knows, maybe we all take advantage of each other in some way or another, even unconsciously?

Could this be called 'A (strategic) reciprocal or mutual benefit relationship'? :)

That's certainly a much less cynical way of putting it, Haihao.
