GRE issue sample: Universities should require every student to take a variety... #1 (permalink) Sat Sep 15, 2007 18:03 pm   GRE issue sample: Universities should require every student to take a variety...

“universities should require every student to take a variety of courses outside the student’s field of study because acquiring knowledge of various academic disciplines is the best way to become educated”

The conception that students should take up courses outside their field of study to broaden their knowledge in various academic disciplines is not acceptable from a students perspective. There are a variety of reasons that can be attributed to this.

Firstly ,a student enters a particular university with the dreams of specializing and acquiring the maximum possible technical insight in his field of specialization.Infact students select a particular course in a university by analyzing how well the selected course would help them out in entering their field of interest. They desire to learn a lot from an industry perspective in their preffered specialization rather than deviating to other outside courses in the name of acquiring knowledge of various academic disciplines.

One might argue that students absolutely require a basic knowledge and understanding of various available academic disciplines to decide for themselves in which they will excel well.but this basic knowledge needed is imparted to a student during his school days itself. There is no extra effort required at an university level to make the student aware of all disciplines.
Students would encourage any activity that is carried out by the university in their particular area of study.

for eg:for a student who is specializing in mechanical engineering,it would be of a great experience to him to visit a automobile assembly line factory as an industrial visit.

secondly a student selects a particular university depending on how well the university has established itself in the students preferred area of specialization. For this, the university would require to offer a particular course of the students interest form a more of a practical perspective. Thus a student in no way would be lured by the variety of the possible courses offered apart from the area of specialization in the name of acquiring broad knowledge of all the disciplines.

for eg:a student would prefer a university which has its study program designed in such a way that can give the student the maximum possible techinical insight, rather than a university that has a variety of courses being covered in its academic program.

There goes a fancy saying like "Jack of all trades ,but master of none".Thus in todays competetive world we need specialists in all fields who posess the greatest possible technical knowledge in that field. Industry will always favor specialists who has the required technical insight to manage critical problems that would be faced in the industry's endeavour to success and fame.

for eg:a student would prefer a university which has its study program designed in such a way that can give the student the maximum possible techinical insight, rather than a university that has a variety of courses being covered in its academic program.===> example, technical. Spell correctly. Use google spell checker when typing. Your sentences are long and points have been used redundantly.
Universities with excellent education are preferred by a student. A variety of courses can deviate a students mind. In the end, he will be left with minute knowledge of his own favourite subject.

This is breaking of sentences.

GRE issue sample: Universities should require every student to take a variety... #4 (permalink) Sun Sep 30, 2007 7:35 am   GRE issue sample: Universities should require every student to take a variety...

The statement that students should be taught variety of courses beyond their field is improper. Every student wishes to master a subject of his choice and interest. He may aspire to become a doctor, lawyer, engineer or a scientist. One cannot imagine a lawyer doing surgeries. The above statement is therefore ambiguous. Mastering one field would be easier for a student compared to mastering several fields at once.

These days many students commit suicide, or leave studies due to growing pressure and increase in competition. Earlier we had less subjects in academics, students used to study few subjects and get excellent grades. This can be one reason why we had so many discoveries and theories in the past then in present. Trying to force too many subjects on students so that he becomes a learned scholar leaves the student in dilemma where he is unable to decide which subject is best for him. The universities and institutes in India force several non optional subjects on students during their academic life. He has to study 45 subjects in 4 years times. So at the end of his education the student usually wanders to determine his field of interest.

The grades he would have achieved if he studied fewer subjects, would have been more compared to what he secured with numerous subjects. Besides the complexity of subjects and over burden on taking more subjects will be reduced.
He can devote more time on one subject and have a better knowledge of it rather then taking more subjects, with small knowledge of it.
The idea of making the student versatile is vague and not in the benefit of the student. Therefore it is better to have a student study lesser subjects of his interest rather then diverse subjects not related to his course.
