GRE Issue: The media -and society in general -mistakenly expect an individual... Wed Sep 19, 2007 18:16 pm  GRE Issue: The media -and society in general -mistakenly expect an individual...

"The media-and society in general-mistakenly expect an individual to speak for a particular group, whether or not that individual truly represents the views of the entire group"

The expectation from an individual when he comes forward to represent or voice the views of a group is that he throughly understands the purpose of the group.but the media and society in general often does the mistake by reflecting the wrong picture of a group by involving a person who is in no way related to the group. There are so many reasons that can be attributed to this kind of behaviour by the media.

Experience tells us that whenever a particular individual posesses the power or authority to bring about changes, the society as a whole depends solely on that individual for any issue or problem.
for eg : a group that has been formed to address a certain issue like scarcity of drinking water in an area ,often depends on the politician under whom that area comes under for getting the problem resolved.
However the politician or for that matter any person with authority makes use of this opportunity to make himself known for a larger crowd in the name of representing the views of the group and raising his voice to a larger body or his higher authority and making this problem a larger issue rather than finding an immediate solution that can be done within his power.

To be more clear,a group is often formed by people whose views are kindred and all of whom want some problem or issue to be addressed for the betterment of society. However the notion of media and society in general is that ,the views of any group that seem to be meaningful can be brought before a larger audience only through the voice of a celebrity or politician.
Thus the media deliberately makes a third person who is a well known celebrity to get involved in the issue simply for the advertisement.
for eg: the media may arrange for interviews and discussions with well known personalities to voice their views on the issue and broadcasting the same on a television. This only tests the patience of the people who are actually affected and as a result they may resort to violent measures to get their grievances or difficulties resolved.

Everyone needs to understand the fact that ,whenever one faces a critical problem or issue,he or she takes the best possible action to find immediate solution to the problem rather than making a big fuss out of it.This simple reasoning applies even to issues or problems that are encountered at a broader level. Thus the media and society should always get right person of the group to reflect the views of the group which will ultimately help in finding an immediate solution to the issue at hand rather than playing a game at the cost of the affected people of the group.

To sum up the media and society should understad the gravity about the views of a group and should always try to reflect the actual views of the group
if at all the views are meaningful and that which would definitely help in the betterment of the society.Afterall the prime responsibility of a media is to represent and voice the views of people to bring them to notice to a larger mass and find an immediate solution that is neat and clean. This will greatly strengthen the belief the people or group has on media in getting an critical issue resolved.
