I'm gonna shoot my shot at this:
1 - D 2 - A 3 - I can't get the main point of the dialogue, but I'd go for A |

Hi Vaok, Let me share my thoughts with you. 1.In the second half of the sentence you explain the reason of your not going to the New Year's concert. I vote for 'B'(I can' t go to the New Year's concert, that is, $100 is just too much for me to spend in one evening..)
I'd say 'in other words also fits, but since it's misspelt, I ruled out this option. I mean could be used if, at least, after 'concert, there would be em-dash.
2.The Lakers scored 20 points in the last quarter,____the Heat 101-96. A. beating B. having beaten C. to beat D. beaten I chose 'B' as 'having beaten the heat 101-96' is prior to scoring 20 points.
-----Alice is visiting her mother today. -----In that case,____ you have dinner with us?
I prefer 'A'
I am a non-native speaker :) Wait for the experts! |

Hi Pamela,
I'm not an expert nor a native speaker but I think the Lakers first scored 20 points which resulted in beating the Heat 101-96, so I would say A

Hi again!
I was just wondering if all three solutions are possible in the first example sentence? I think that 'in othere words' is just a typo! :?

| Quite possible! But sometimes I find many errors in tests produced intentionally. Only Vaok can confirm that. |

When I posted my question, I didn't see 'in particular'--I think that is the only wrong option! :D

| Yes, 'C' is out of place that's why I didn't mention it in my original post. |

A. in other words B. that is C. in particular D. I mean |
'in other words' is used when the speaker says something again in another way, for example: We cannot continue with the deal on this basis. In other words, unless you can bring down the price we shall have to cancel the order.
We use 'I mean' when we are going to make things clearer, or give more details, for example: It was a terrible evening. I mean, they all sat round and talked politics for hours.
And I still haven't found 'that is' as a discourse marker, only 'that is to say'.
So, it is either 'in other words' or 'I mean'. To me, they look pretty much the same! :? :D

The only explanation I have is that it could be a question tag, for example: You will have dinner with us, won't you? Because if Alice is going to visit her mother, she probably is not going to have dinner with them so they are asking a confirmation from her husband, for example if HE is going to have dinner with them. :D Or they are asking him: does it mean that you also won't have dinner with us because Alice isn't here?
But, I don't see why it couldn't be A as an invitation: Will you have dinner with us?(because Alice is not at home)
I think the answer for this question depends on context! :D

When I first answered your question, I said the answer is A but now I'm not so sure! I was right when I said to Pamela that B is not the answer because the Lakers first scored the points which resulted in beating the Heat, so if the right answer is C it is because this is a clause of purpose and you can see it more clearly if you change the order of the main and subordinate clause:
To beat the Heat 101-96, the Lakers scored 20 points in the last quarter.(=In order to beat the Heat/So that they could beat the Heat, the Lakers...)
